Unless you've been under a rock, you have to know what Serial is by now. If it is true that you actually enjoy living under a rock, well lets fix that. Serial is a spin off podcast of the radio program 'This American Life' and hosted by Sarah Koenig.

Season 1 is an investigation into a 1999 Baltimore murder. Koenig has said, Serial is “about the basics: love and death and justice and truth. All these big, big things.”[2] She also has noted, “this is not an original idea. Maybe in podcast form it is, and trying to do it as a documentary story is really, really hard. But trying to do it as a serial, this is as old as Dickens.”[3] Episodes are released weekly on Thursday, and vary in length.

Serial is the quickest to 5 million downloads from iTunes since they were first tracked in 2006. If you have a smartphone and ears, then Serial is a must listen.

I've been listening to a variety of podcasts for several years. During that time I've used half a dozen podcatchers and this is the best choice by far.

Free to download and use, but the real gems come after you pay $4.99.

The upgrade adds several features but these two are worth the cost by themselves:

  • Smart Speed - Takes dead air out of a podcast, which in turn reduces amount of time it takes to listen
  • Voice Boost - Equalizes the audio to make sure all podcasts sound fantastic regardless of recording quality

Unfortunately Overcast is not available on any platform other than iOS, but that doesn't mean you can't listen.
